Employment in Milwaukee...

Last night after enjoying the commentary of the Anderson Silva K.O. victory over Chel Sonnen, I viewed a program on the Fox Channel about unemployment and the current American economy. I didn’t get the name of the program, but it was very insightful. The idea of the program turned everything you would think about searching for employment on its ear.

I can remember years ago, many years ago, I would go to a company and have to apply. Some of those applications were like small novellas; page after page of repeating questions and information. Now you can save yourself time and money by just going to your computer, applying on-line and that’s it! The problem with that is, it seems as though, I rarely hear back from employers. On the Fox Channel program, it was said, employers aren’t really looking for new hires through this new system. New hires usually come from word of mouth through current/existing employees. If this is true, is it fair? Maybe not, but I wonder if you’d disagree when it benefits you.

Today in this drab economy, we must find ways to secure and maintain financial stability for our families. It goes behind your individual comfort zone in a position or at a particular company. An individual must take into account factors like job/position security and insurance. Today, we can’t focus much on retirement, advancement, or other elements of career growth. As companies are downsizing and relocating away from us, we have to do what’s best for our economic futures. As an employee or perspective employee, you must be willing to sacrifice and sometimes sacrifice some very hard places.

I’ve talked with multiple people in Milwaukee and surrounding areas and there’s one common certainty. Everyone believes Milwaukee has a dead economy and to find employment, one must travel and venture elsewhere.

Question: How do you feel about the local economy and do you feel Milwaukee has a dead economy?

  1. I do not feel like milwaukee has a dead economy, but i do believe businesses are cashing into the tea party belief system which includes discrimination. Milwaukee, and Wisconsin, businesses are exploiting workers based on their hardship. They are paying near minimum wage for difficult work and expecting employees to put their heart and soul into it. More companies are making it impossible to afford benefits for the individual, let alone the family. Further, more and more businesses are relying on temporary agencies for employees. With this, workers are paid lower wages and not entitled to benefits or more than minimum wage. Many companies are never hiring through the company, like in the past, fir a job well done. Their employees remain temporary. People are being exploited more than ever and since you can't begin to support a family on less than $10 per hour, why bother? Why go work at a place who exploits you, reminds you you're temporary, and pays you next to nothing.
The economy is not dead. Humanity and respecting dignity is dead...not just here. Its making its way across the US, slowly but surely.
